Companion Animal Emergency Procedures:

Morning Lectures: (4 hours)
Triage and shock: We will discuss how to evaluate an emergency patient and determine if the patient is stable (or not) and what are prudent steps that can be taken to try and stabilize the patient if  needed. We will learn about the primary survey or triage exam and how it can be useful for both emergent patients as well as any patient that is not doing well.

Respiratory distress: We will be approaching the respiratory distress patient from an emergency perspective. How can we stabilize this patient without even knowing what is causing their respiratory distress. What are low-stress, non-invasive ways to evaluate this patient so that we can provide more specific therapy that does not jeopardize these fragile patients. As part of this, we will work on developing the ability to localize the cause of the respiratory problem based on breathing pattern alone (no equipment required!)

Blunt force trauma: Blunt force trauma such as hit by car, fall from height (dropped), stepped on, kicked by, etc are the most common types of trauma seen in veterinary medicine. We will learn how to evaluate this specific set of patients in more detail. From basic stabilization to neuro trauma, point of care ultrasound, and beyond.

Wet Lab (optional): Approx 4 hours.

POCUS: We will be covering point of care ultrasound techniques to assess both the thoracic and abdominal cavity using cadavers. We will have cadavers with fluid in body cavities if you would like to gain more practice on ultrasound guided aspiration of fluid/other structures.

Emergency procedures: We will have cadavers available and can cover a range of procedures (group choice)  nasopharnygel oxygen placement, nasogastric tube placement, blind endotracheal intubation, tracheotomy, thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, mila chest tube placement, venous cut downs for emergent venous catheterization. Depending on cadaver selection we may be able to practice female U caths in dogs/cats.

1:00 pm- 5:00 pm Industry Speakers (afternoon session)
